Understanding Perimenopause
The average age of menopause for women in Australia is around 51. Most women
experience perimenopause for 5 to 10 years, but for simplicity, let’s estimate it at 7 years.
If we subtract 7 years from 51, we get 44. So, if you’re around 44 years old—give or take a
few years—there’s a good chance you’re already in perimenopause.
How Nutrition Plays a Major Role in Perimenopause
Perimenopause, the transition leading up to menopause, is a natural phase in life accompanied by significant hormonal changes. This can affect:
- metabolism (often causing weight gain)
- mood
- periods
- bone health
- overall health
It is essential to understand how nutrition can support well-being and long-term health. If you’re navigating perimenopause, paying attention to your diet and lifestyle is key to managing experiences and promoting longevity.
Causes of Perimenopause-Related Health Changes
Shifts in hormone levels, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, largely drive the health changes during perimenopause. These fluctuations can affect various body systems and lead to common changes.
Contributing Factors Include:
Hormonal Imbalances:
-
- Decreased oestrogen production can impact bone density, heart health, and mood regulation.
Nutrient Deficiencies:
-
- As nutrient needs change during perimenopause, deficiencies in key vitamins and minerals like calcium, magnesium, and B vitamins can exacerbate changes.
Lifestyle Factors:
-
- Stress, poor sleep, and a lack of physical activity can intensify hormonal imbalances and fatigue.
Common Symptoms of Perimenopause
Common experiences during perimenopause include:
- Fatigue, exhaustion & low energy levels
- Weight gain, especially around the abdomen
- Hot flushes
- Night sweats
- Mood swings
- Irritability
- Anxiety
- Irregular periods
- Changes in menstrual flow
- Brain fog
- Memory problems

You won’t simply be told to cut out carbs or follow some generic diet. All nutritional advice given at Katie Blakely Wellness is individual to the client sitting in front of us. Whether it be:
- a personalised meal plan with recipes & a shopping list provided
- brainstroming meal ideas that suit you and your family, or
- learning how to create healthy meals yourself
We ensure that nutrition plans are crafted to assess your unique perimenopausal needs and goals. We also strive to ensure that you are not only meeting your nutritional needs, but that you are eating foods that you enjoy & that are suited to your lifestyle needs.
Tailored Supplements:
We don’t tend to recommend you go to the pharmacy to buy supplements. Why? They haven’t been prescribed to you. When taking supplements it’s important to asses:
- would your body benefit from this?
- can you get these nutrients from food?
- what amount of these nutrients do you need?
- what form of nutrient is in this supplement?
- is this an appopriate supplement for you as an individual?
In all consultations (excluding Blood Test Analysis appointments) our Nutritionist & Naturopath assess if there are any supplements suited to you. While some of our clients prefer to take a diet-only approach to clinical nutrition, many of our clients enjoy a blended approach combining appropriate dietary changes with specific supplements to improve symptoms.
Holistic Support:
We consider overall wellness, including stress management and lifestyle changes, to help you thrive during perimenopause. We know this is often a busy time – you might have work pressures, kids, a partner, dogs, parents who require care – we understand and are here to meet you where you’re at.
